Was the mayan calender a countdown of the return of their once ruler, instead?

People are freaking out that the world is going to end in 2012, but maybe, what i think, could be a return of their ruler. As some may know the mayan leader may or may not have been from space so perhaps they were waiting for their king to return to earth after this time.
