In the movie "HOSTAGES" with Bruce Willis - can someone explain the ending?

At the end of the movie, why did the accountant (Walter Smith) want the hostage takers to kill Bruce Willis? What did that achieve? He could have put Bruce Willis' life in danger no reason.
