Why is there discrimination against Jehovah's Witness in Syria?

It would be somewhat like the way Ahmediya muslims are regarded in Pakistan - i.e holding to a distorted version of religion. We should allow people to have their beliefs (as far as they aren't physically harming others). A lot of people say the JW organisation uses techniques used by cults, but I don't know enough to say if that is so.
